    using homespun for quilt

    I recently was drawn to a display of gray, navy, maroon, and off white homespun and bought it to make a quilt. I haven't used it in a while, but I do remember that it ravels quite a bit and usually doesn't press like cotton. Does anyone have any tips that will help me make this into a wonderful quilt?

    Heavy starch will help control the fraying. And I would stabilize the edges with a serger or stay stitching and wash it to preshrunk it and check for color fastness.

      I made a quilt from homespuns from kit that I got from my mom one year. I love the softness of the fabrics and didn't have any trouble with fraying (don't know why). But I did use a wool batting (before I paid attention to things like brand of batting) and this quilt has a lot of bearding. I ignore the bearding and this is one of my favorite quilts because it is so cuddly! But you might want to do some testing beforehand so you aren't disappointed. Note that I also wash this quilt fairly aggressively because it is used so much so that might also cause some of the bearding. But this is the only quilt I have that beards and I wash all of my quilts the same way.

        I resqued some big log cabin blocks" made "( and I use that term loosely :roll: ) from homespuns.
        I starched the things 'till they were like frisbees !! then did a serpentine stitch over every seem to make
        sure it didn't ravel out for the quilting. When I washed it it ...it softened up and I really like it !
