    Me & My New Machine!!

Some of you asked, and while I don't have a picture of me & Maggie (my new machine, LOL!) at my house yet, this is a picture my good friend Joyce (She-Quilts) took while I was having my intro class.

The machine is the Janome Magnolia 7318 and is a perfect beginner machine for me. It doesn't have as many bells/whistles as I might one day want, but for my budget it's the best I could do and still stay with a well know, reliable brand.

I am set up and sewing today --- in one *hour* I managed to pair up all the triangles for the last third of the baby quilt I'm working on. That would have taken me at least a full day of sewing before, to get all of them paired (there were 60 pairs to do). So now I'm taking a short break and then going to clean house just a little and then put the pairs into rows and then assemble that, well, we'll see how far I get as there is life to attend to still, but may I just say, this "electric needle" as Joyce calls it is AMAZING. Simply amazing.

Back to sewing, just wanted to share the picture with you guys! (well, snack, sweep/mop, then sew....)

thank you thank you thank you!!! Yes, we are (so far) very happy together!!

Took a break, cleaned house with my boys, have eaten a snack, and realize I have about an hour before I need to cook dinner. Gee, I wonder what all I can get done between now and then??? Going to sew some more, but stopped in here first to say thank you to all of you. Not just for the well wishes but for all the help & encouragement along the way. Hopefully, a finished quilt top to show you very soon!

thanks, I really am! I just sewed a bit more --- took me 30 minutes to get all the pairs pressed and ready to go, and then in 30 more minutes I'd finished putting together the 1st row!!! That would have taken all my sewing time for one day when I was going by hand. This thing is incredible!!!

To answer your question, though, we live in Sao Paulo state, not too far from the city of Campinas. We're about an hour outside the city of Sao Paulo; about a 6 hour drive from Rio de Janeiro (city). But we've traveled fairly extensively here in Brazil in the 5 years we've been here, so I'm familiar with a lot of the country (at least, the coast. we've focused most of our travels so far on the beaches, plus we did go to Manaus to see the Amazon once).

Great photo, thanks for sharing. Sounds like you and Maggie are having fun and accomplishing a lot. May you both enjoy lots of creative time together.

That's great that you're traveling while you live there. Never been there but have seen great pictures of Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo. My Mom and 1 of my sisters were there on vacation a few years ago and came home fascinated. It's on my bucket list, together with Buenos Aires, Argentina so, maybe some day...

thanks, Limbania! Buenos Aires is on my list, too....we haven't made it over there yet. We focused first on Brazil specifically, thinking once we're moved back to the US, who knows if/when we'll return. We're just about done with all the Brazil places we had on our list so will branch out soon to the rest of S. America. Well, "soon" being a relative term; perhaps next year we'll get over there for a visit.

Heather - you know when you are sewing and you just run out of thread a couple of inches before the end - well this also happens with sewing machines only it is usually the bobbin that runs out and if you are not careful you can find that you have paired up 2-4 pairs and machined them only to find that there is no stitching in them, just a neat row of holes - don't ask how I know

this is a very good tip, thank you!!!

One thing I love on this machine, it has a top-loading bobbin, and the cover is clear, so I can easily see in to the thread. So maybe that won't happen to me quite as much. Maybe. (hey, a girl can hope, right??)

Also, thanks to the many tips here, I did buy a LOT of extra bobbins (it came with 4, and I bought a rectangular case of I think 24 more) so I can have bobbins loaded in the various colors I need and ready to go, since I tend to swap around projects. So maybe that will help as well.

One thing I've learned already --- the machine sure makes the sewing part go faster, but the pressing, pinning, etc. takes just as long. LOL! Although, I must admit, that 1/4" foot is marvelous and does save that step (marking) at least!

yes, you can easily see the thread in the bobbin - mine is top loading and clear too, but I haven't found a way of seeing through fabric yet, and I am seriously experienced at trying.
