    http://www.whyquiltsmatter.org/welcome/

My friend Darla posted this message

I found a website that lead me to this amazing looking miniseries that will be on PBS in the fall: Why Quilts Matter.

This looks like a good miniseries, help me ladies to remember to watch it when it comes out! Talks about the history of quilts in America, goes into lots of topics - art, politics, history, community ... lots of things! Here is the website.

IF WE QUILTERS WANT MORE OF THIS TYPE OF PROGRAMING WE NEED TO MAKE SURE WE WATCH AND LET PBS KNOW BY WRITING TO THEM. We also need to drive the rating up by posting on every forum, blog we post on and let others know. If every quilter watches this program I think quilting will begin growing again.

    FOLLOW THE LINKS:

Good news! You do not have to wait until early fall to see this remarkable series about quilts that will educate and entertain, episode by episode, when it premiers on PBS stations. Why Quilts Matter: History, Art & Politics, the ultimate guide, is available now on DVD, at this website.

I remember hearing about this series coming to PBS, but lost track of it. Thanks for bringing it to our attention. I can't wait to see the series. It adds so much to this hobby of quilting when we see it put into a larger perspective -- tying our work to all those who went before and will come after.

I agree that we need more of this type of programming and should support the stations who provide it.

I agree that we need to let PBS know that we appreciate this program.

A couple of years ago, our Detroit Free Press canceled the weekly sewing column in the Sunday newspaper. I called to complain, and they explained that the columnist had retired and so they replaced it with another advice column -- like the two are interchangeable!

I told the editor I spoke with that if the SPORTS columnist had retired, they wouldn't eliminate the SPORTS section, and since we only got one measly column a week, it wasn't too much to ask.

I might add that we now have an occasional CRAFT article, and that's it.

I think that we as quilters are mostly ignored by the mainstream press. (Heck, even HGTV canceled Simply Quilts on us.) Thus, we need to show our appreciation when networks do come through.

Yeah but the up side of Simply Quilts getting cancelled is that we now have The Quilt Show which is far more accessible for everyone, wherever we are in the world!

I just contacted all my quilting friends in the NYC metro area to write to our PBS station to please carry this series. I've also written to PBS directly.

Looks like it will be a fascinating series - pity I don't live in America! Glad, however, to see that it can be bought on DVD - sad to see that it can only be bought in America at this time.

GET A FRIEND TO BUY IT FOR YOU AND THEN MAIL IT TO YOU.

WHO KNOWS IF WE ASK MAYBE TQS WILL CARRY THE SERIES FOR THE OVER SEAS VIEWERS... IT WOULD NOT HURT TO ASK.

A concern that I did not think of until I talked to my hubby.... Will the NORTH AMERICAN format work on your DVDs. I know DVDs are formatted for different regions and you have to have a compatible DVD. If you have played other DVDs made for N Am then you should be good to go.... but you might want to check into it.

DVDs for North America are Code 1
DVDs for Europe are Code 2
DVDs for Australia are Code 4

if you have a CODE FREE DVD player you can watch all

there are also some uncoded DVDs out there - but most commercially available DVDs are coded

IMPORTANT: some DVD players (and especially those on PCs & Laptops) come unprogrammed and you can switch from one to the other - BUT: it only lets you switch 2 or 3 times and then you are STUCK ON THAT CODE FOREVER !!!!
unless you or a good friend is really good at doing stuff to PCs that most of us can't

here a link for wikipedia explaining the various codes and DVD player types and much much more...
and yes - most DVD players can be adjusted so they play any code - however - this can generally only be done by someone who knows HOW - and some (or probably most) of us unfortunately don't

                        http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DVD_region_code

i've been battling with the various region differences since i moved to switzerland in the mid eighties... first VHS and now DVD

Thanks for that Lotti. It sounds like it's a question for my friend Brian who knows everything to do with such things. I will let you know what I find out. Why do they have to make the systems different in the first place?

LOL. I often think of this little poem when I think about all the stuff I am clueless about.
