Do you STAY STITCH your pieced borders?

I have a pieced boarder ( piano style) and I am told I should stay stitch so the various seams stay flat before I attach it to the quilt. I am just wondering if this should be done?

What do the award winning quilters do? Any tips would be appreciated.

It sure would make attaching it to the quilt easier! If it is your outside border, definitely stay stitch the outside edge!

For a piano key type pieced border, I would just press all the seams in the same direction, and be sure to pin the border to the quilt with the seams facing away from the needle and feed dogs as it goes through the sewing machine, so they won't get flipped and stitched in the wrong direction.

Stay stitching the outside edge of any final border makes sense because we don't usually backstitch those seams.

Especially stay-stitch if the border is on the bias...just saying.

If you are going to give the quilt to a longarmer to finish, they all appreciate having the outside borders stay stitched. Not just piano keys but all pieced borders.
