Request for questions from NEWBIE QUILTERS

    http://blog.caronmosey.com/p/about.html

    Caron at MICHIGAN QUILTS

If you could ask an experienced quilter any questions you wanted, what would they be?

What do you want to learn from another quilter that you don't already know?

Questions can be about any technique, skill, method, tools, design process, color or fabric selection, etc.

CARON IS WRITING A COLUMN FOR QUILTERS BUT SHE NEEDS THE QUESTIONS FROM NEWBIES...

Please brainstorm and send your questions to me at

    mailto:caronmosey@gmail.com

Judy, a really good source of quilting ideas is one of the many web sites for digital quilting designs that long-armers use, which offer both digital designs and paper pantographs. You may not need their products, but they are a wealth of ideas that you can use to jump start your own designs!

My question isn't so much the quilting design, but whether or not the chosen design best relates to the quilt pattern. If one has little or no art background
how do you determine what will best enhance your work? I've seen several comments recently where the critique had to do with the relationship of the quilt
            pattern to the quilting design.

I think that may be a judgement call, but common sense would say that using a flowing flower motif would not be a good quilting choice for something like a mariner's compass quilt. Something more nautical or angular would probably be a better choice. Or you probably wouldn't want to use cute little fishy motifs on a Baltimore Album style quilt. It also comes from studying what is done by award winning quilters and seeing what choices they make. I think that a lot of it is a matter of educating yourself to what is pleasing to you. Reading quilting books, magazines and checking the internet sources will show you what works and what doesn't. And there is nothing like seeing quilts at a show! When you see a quilt that you really like, analyze what you like about it. What quilting designs were used?
