I have two purchased quilts that I bought before I started quilting in 1999. I also have a double wedding ring quilt that I made and use in the summer as I used a light weight batting. I have made quilts for 9 grandchildren & 7 great grandchildren. I also can see nothing wrong with purchasing quults that catch your eye and fit in the decor of a particular room. I don't have quilts on my beds either. I have store bought comforters. I have three cats and I would much rather them snuggle on the bed and ruin a store comforter. I do plan to make us one...eventually, but it will be a functional easy one, rather than something like Stars for a New Day..that one is going on the wall!! Sandi in FL

I purchased a quilt off a clothes line when I drove home from Texas back in 1973... it was made with polyester fabric and cost all of $35. It lasted over 20 years then it fell apart. I would consider buying some in the future if I like the pattern.
Made a memorial quilt for my parents back in 2000 with over 300 family pictures...started as a twin ended up a king size quilt. It moves from closet to closet in between viewing.
I must be selfish cause any large quilt I make, now-a-days, ends up on my family or my beds. I gave one to my sister as a Christmas/Wedding present and I do make baby quilts ... but then again for my grandson gets the majority. When my daughter was little I had matching MADE IN CHINA quilts on her twin/bunk beds, so I made her a quilt for her bed. All my give away quilts are of the simplest patterns; for my quilts I am much more elaborate and intricate.
The quilts I make in the future will grace my home. My family left Italy with nothing and were never ones to really have much when they past... The did give all four of their kids a good education so that was the best legacy children can have. So any quilts I make now or for me and mine and others (nieces / nephews) can get them when I pass away.
As is when I am working I only get one or two quilts a year finished to the point of being bound... I make tons of blocks but do not get them put together as that for me is the hardest part especially the sampler quilts.
Have a fun quilting day... no quilting for me til I finish my Advance Life Support test tomorrow.

My home is a real mix. I have bed quilts that I made, two that were made by friends, wallhangings made by me, wallhangings made by friends, wallhangings made by quilters I don't know and purchased at charity auctions, table mats made by me, tablemats made by friends, appliquéd tablemats bought when on holiday in Maine...... Well, you get the drift. Every piece is loved and gets used somehow.
And I'm delighted that my son, his partner, and their cat use a large bed quilt I made. I told them that I'll make another one if this one gets damaged or falls to pieces. So far it looks great, has survived numerous washes, and the cat sleeps on it, under it, but (no idea why) does not claw at it, even though she claws at the fabrics that cover sofas and chair seats.

I use all the quilts I have made - either hanging on the walls or on my bed
My cats sleep on them, we sleep under them
I throw them on the floor for my grandson to play on
We sit under them to watch tv
Even the ones that have won ribbons take their turn to be used
Then they go into the washing machine and out on the line to dry
No they are not machine made, not machine quilted, not store bought
They are all quilts I have hand made with love and are used with love

Also like Miles, I thought of our quilts, even the bed-sized ones, as wall hangings - or special winter-evenings-on-the-couch quilts. Even though I loved that people actually used the quilts I gave away.
But then a couple years ago, the owner of our LQS said some of my quilts looked 'dated'. I went through each stage of grieving for a very prolonged period. And then I thought, what a shame it is for most quilts to get 'dated' while they are still in pristine condition. Especially mine. So we're using ours a lot more now - even with two dogs and four cats.
The only quilt I ever bought was one of my sisters to keep it from getting out of the family. Oh, and a few at our hardcopy guild's small quilt auctions.

I have all of the above -- store bought, handmade by me, handmade by others, handmade by others and finished by me. If I love the quilt, well it has a tendency to find its way into our home.
It takes me longer than most to finish a quilt so I have to supplement with other beautiful pieces. I really enjoy finding tops that other quilters have not finished and completing them. I pray that at some point some of my unfinished tops will find their way into the hands of someone who like me sees the beauty in them and finishes them, uses them, and loves them as I did the ones I found.
Maybe it's my age but I'm finding that I want to use and love all of the items in my home. No china or table linens for just special occassions. We have begun to love and use them in everyday life, and it actually has made me appreciate them even more because I get to see, touch, and use them.

I have quilts on all the walls and a lap size friendship quilt that I use all the time. I made a queen size quilt for my daughter's wedding present, which she has kept in pristine condition (LOVE that girl!!!). I've never made a quilt for my own bed, though, and I don't really want to make a California King size quilt for my bed! I keep my prize 1930's Double Wedding Ring quilt folded across the foot of my bed. It used to hang on the wall when we owned our home and it was beautiful with the vaulted ceiling. It needs to "rest" now at the foot of our bed. I've never bought a quilt from China because I remember the Smithsonian-Chinese quilt controversy and I just never wanted to support the selling of our prized American quilt patterns. I don't have any store bought quilts. I have 2 king size very soft fleese blankets on our bed & a electric Blanket! I have my quilts in our extra bedroom just for decoration because we do not use this bedroom I don't want to fold my quilts and the ceder chest is a big no no. I can have a fold back show & Tell! I only have two wall hanging quilts. Daughter Cinda has her living room show cased with my quilts laying pretty across her couch and across Mia bed...pretty I must say! Daughter Trisha has all my quilts stored away and puts them out occationally. Everyone else I made quilts for uses them except for my Mom to she puts hers on spare bed for decoration. When I give a quilt to someone I hope they will use it. I use to sleep under some of my quilts but I love the soft feel of fleese and my electric blanket!

I bought a handquilted, king size quilt in a small shop ( Hickory Creek?) in the Appalachians in 1993. I can still visualise it ... it was the start of my quilting adventure that lasts untill today. The quilt was dark blue and green with little pink flowers and it has been on our bed untill it was faded by the light. I replaced it last year with a selfmade quilt and folded the "old" one .. I will never part from it!

There are no store bought quilts on our beds. In addition to 2 quilts DH Mike and I have on our bed, we also have a down comforter that was given to me at my bridal shower in 1982 by my MIL and her mother, DH's Nana.
There are quilts on every wall in the house except the bathroom and my longarm studio. I haven't hung any in the studio because I'm just lazy and don't take the time.

No store quilts here either, my quilts are made to be used. I have a stack of about 20 on the spare bed which would suffocate anyone who tried to sleep under them  but I would have at least one on the bed for visitors. We have one on our bed on top of the down duvet, and it's used every night. I also have a couple on the sofa for snuggling under watching TV. You can't beat the feeling of sleeping under a home-made quilt, and you can admire it and stroke it every time you go to bed .
