I was a spelling champion in grade school but no one ever told me then that I had to be a proof reader too ( I know there is spell checker but after I worked in a law firm and found out it was our worst enemy because too many mistakes slipped by I gave up on it ) and you know what 99% of the time I understand exactly what any one here is saying -- some differences are because we live in different countries and spell and see things differently. ( a number of my favorite people on this web site are from other countries and sometimes the spelling is a little different but hey gang who could speak Norwegian Dutch Italian or even Australian and England english without a mistake or two if it wasn't your way of doing things) so if someone at ARJJ or their staff or any of the rest of us make a mistake or two or even more, WHO CARES. Someone else on this site talked about snobbles ( a fun take on DR. Seuss) so now I say down with "SPELLNIKS" if you cant stand a spelling error now and then ----dont read my entries because I am the worlds worst proof reader (Florence could you give me a lesson because your newspaper company must be better than me and I know your kids are) so that is my soap box for tonight I hope we can be friendly and nice to each other and give our fearless leaders (Alex Ricky Justin John and all their crew) a break -spelling errors and all this has to be the best quilting website and maybe the best website in general around . So I have no time for snobbles spellniks or any of the other nay sayers. This is my home and ITS A NEW DAY Ann

katzzz I love you you are a person after my own heart. What ever we do and how we do it is always an adventure so keep up your humor and I just hope I can read your interesting spelling from time to time.
and Judy in Ohio I don't think any of us are trying to make fun of you for your opinions on spelling --- we just happen to have a differnet opinion and my feeling is VIVA LA DIFFERANCE (and that is probably spelled wrong Vivi my friend maybe you can correct me if you see this)

I think Judy was referring to the "professional" communication from whoever writes the newsletter, etc.
Not to those of us on the forum.
I'll have to admit, I do sometimes notice spelling errors (sometimes they are MINE) but I'm usually too time-stressed to do anything about it.
So, ..... that's my take on it.

Judy wasn't making fun of anyone. She was pointing out the fact that the newsletters TQS sends need a little proofreading done before they're sent to us so they look more professional. It's a business and should conduct itself as such in its communications.
She does have an excellent point when she said,
"Embroider means one thing." It's an action (a verb).
"Embroiderer means another thing." It's a person or a machine.
Big difference!
We all make typing mistakes and certainly are not the best of spellers and we all understand that.

Judy,
I don't think they were making fun of you. I think both Kathy & Ann were making the point that most folks don't catch the spelling or noun/verb mistakes. With a site this big and all of the stuff they're involved with it's difficult to catch all of the mistakes. Granted.
That being said, may I make a suggestion - that might be helpful to them and to all of us as well - offer to proofread the news letter before it goes out. This way simple mistakes such as "embroider" "embroiderer" can be caught. And it will improve the overall quality of the newsletter and the site.
Side note - there's a spelling mistake somewhere on the site that I notice every single time I use that part of the site. I haven't said a word because it really doesn't bother me all that much. If it did I'd email Bob the webmaster and ask him to fix it.
Happy Quilting!

An Embroiderer embroiders her embroidery :P
Uncorrect spelling is all over, CNN, FOX, news papers, magazines, books (quilting books too) I guess it was just one of those errors that slipped trough  And, maybe in a perfect world with only perfect people "mistakes" like that wont happen! They could have called the show what ever they wanted...it was greate anyways :lol:Teri

Judy,
I'm an admitted spelling snob but I've learned to pick my battles. Now the only ones I correct are DH and DD.
Sometimes it's just not worth the aggravation it causes.
Kathy(it's nice to know your real name )and Ann, you are both so wise in your own ways. Keep on keepin' on!!!!

sorry to get in on this late, had a busy weekend, including our newspaper's regional spelling bee to find a champ to send to Nationals in DC
My take on spelling--yes, it bugs me. I understand typos and surely have a few of my own, so I don't fault anyone on the forum, and even more on chat--tough to go that fast! Typing and spelling don't always equate!
And Judy, I agree, it is WAY more annoying on a professional piece. Will proofread for fabric  Sort of like measure twice, cut once, the newsletter ought to have another set of eyes before it goes out, b/c you can't pull them back. On the site, things can (and should) be fixed. I know I don't call them out on everything I see, b/c imagine if they got hundreds or so corrections on every one mistake! In the newspaper biz, we know that everyone sees our errors, and they love to 'catch' us, but no one ever points out all the things we get right every day!

I have to agree with Judy here. This site is supposed to be professional, and spelling mistakes just look bad. It may not matter in the larger scheme of things, and it isn't going to make the world come to an end, but the way your written word is perceived does make a difference to a lot of people. I have noticed a lot of mistakes in the newsletter as well, even though I never said anything, I always thought that if they can't even proof read their material before they send it out, then something is wrong.
I can understand the differences in languages, and spelling from one country to another. But the newsletter isn't written in a foreign language. When I see spelling mistakes, in a professional publication, my first thought is that who ever was writing it, or proof reading it were lazy and not doing their job. It wasn't "Oh they must have been in a hurry, and didn't catch it."
The mistakes in spelling on the Forum are completely different, those aren't done by professionals and Judy wasn't talking about those made by the members.
This site wasn't started as a lark, just something that would be fun to do. This was a BUSINESS venture, for Ricky and Alex, and the misspellings in the newsletter and on the website detract from the PROFESSIONALISM that Ricky and Alex have shown in most everything I have ever see them do. I don't think Judy was talking about being "PERFECT" but rather, just doing a PROFESSIONAL job in the newletter, and when there are misspellings in every newsletter, that does NOT look professional at all.
