    Beading thread

    Hi -

I'm thinking of adding some beads to a quilted wallhanging (time permitting) and was wondering what kind of thread people use when adding beads to quilts. This is a wallhanging so it doesn't have to withstand the wash, but it still needs to stand up to some handling if it will be taken off the wall and stored.

    Thanks!

Personally, I just used Alex's Masterpiece for beading on a recent wall hanging. I folded it up, took it to a show, and handed it off to the ladies who would later hang it. Then other ladies unhung it, put it into a baggie, and I picked it up at the end of the show. So far so good! Didn't lose a single bead.

I've heard that beaders use Nymo thread which is really strong. I've only beaded a little on my quilts. Each bead was sewed securely down with just cotton piecing thread (doubled). So far so good!

I used nymo thread on my beaded project. If you are using bugle beads or beads that have sharp edges, the bead will cut through the cotton thread. Also, it is a good idea to sew a couple beads, then knot your thread and continue. That way if a bead is lost, you will only lose one or two instead of a whole row.

Please, listen to Terry's excellent advice. Several years ago I received a lovely gift with tiny beads all along the edge of the binding. The thread broke in one place, but it took me half a weekend to find all the itsy-bitsy beads on the floor and under the sofa, and then sew them all back on. Since then, if I do any beading, I tie the thread every half a dozen beads.

Thanks again for the suggestions! I ordered some Nymo thread and have now completed the quilt. I really like how it turned out! Every bead is secure with knots everywhere.

OMG! Nancy, that quilt is wonderful! You are so talented. Of course, it helps that there is lime green in it .

I am a big fan of lime green! And it ended up being the perfect border for the embroidery! I should mention that the embroidery was done by a woman in South Africa and not by me, in case anyone was thinking I did it. I am definitely not that talented! Thanks again for all of your support! I do love TQS!
