Anne - Congratulations on your new machine! Very exciting to have a new machine. I'm looking to replace my 730E Bernina and have been looking online at the Pfaff Quilt Expression 4.2 machine as well as Janome 8200 and Husqvarna Sapphire 930 which is the only machine I have seen so far in the flesh. It is so difficult to choose a machine. Have lots of fun with your machine and let us know how you get on maybe in the Virtual Retreat thread.

genevaI got mine in 2006 and have had one board replaced under warranty. It has never lived up to my expectations of a Bernina in regards to stitch quality (I have an old mechanic 801 Bernina that sews like a dream whatever thread and fabric you ask it to sew with/through) but despite several quirks the 730E has required over the years I still use it for sewing mainly because the light is better than the old machine. I now have a dedicated embroidery machine. The 730E can turn itself off now and again and sometimes the only way I can stop it sewing is by pulling the power cord so it can be a bit of an adventure to use  There is no doubt there is a board that is coming up for replacing and I'm not prepared to pay for a refurbished board in such an old machine.

Marianne,
Your 730E sounds like mine! I bought it in 2007. and she sews without my permission, and I just replaced a board this past summer, not under warranty. I have a Bernina 1130 and I love her. She's like your 801, just knows how to sew and doesn't whine at all! I never could get the BSR to work properly and the embroidery situation is hit and miss. But I do use the 730 for the majority of my sewing. I'm used to her quirks.
I'll be interested to hear what you buy.
Take care, genevaGeneva

I'll be interested to hear what you buy. Take care, genevahmy: I admire you for replacing the board and paying to have it done. You must really love it despite its quirky habits. Did the new board remedy the self-sewing feature?
I'll let you know when the time comes to buy a new machine - I'm taking my time because the 730E is still going but I don't want to make a panic buy when it becomes necessary so keep my ear to the ground and follow what others buy and how happy they are with their choices.
Happy sewing

Marianne, come to think of it, Sybil hasn't done the self sewing thing since she got her new board. She still ticks in the top head part, but only sometimes. At least she doesn't smoke anymore like she used to!
I thought seriously of buying a new machine when Sybil came undone, but I was able to get her fixed for around $350.00, and that wouldn't come close to buying a similar machine. For now I am using her and hoping she will stay good!
Good luck with your research... genevaGeneva

Good luck with your research... genevainch: I was quoted between £ 450 and £ 1000 to have a board replaced depending on which board and with labour which is why I would rather replace the machine than risk having that amount of money go down the drain if either another board blow or the board that has been replaced blow within a short time.
I watched a video on the Husqvarna 690Q yesterday and was amazed how many features you get in a middle range machine today and at under the £ 1000 I could have to pay for the repair.
When I eventually buy a new machine I will report back here and tell you all about it :cheer:
