best way CLEAN/ Wash vintage Quilt Blocks

My grandmother left me 8 quilt blocks from the 1930s-1940s. They were hand pieced by my Great grandmother. I have treasured them for some years.
The blocks need to be cleaned. I finally want to put them together.
what is best soap/cleaner to use on these ? the best method to clean? I am thinking the wash machine may be too harsh for them.

    Thanks do much, Janet G.

What I've used for old linens is Retro Clean. You definitely don't want to put them in the washing machine! I soak the items in the Retro Clean in water and agitate them a little with my hands. Then rinse them and lay them flat to dry. I've only done a few things, but that has worked well for me.

I have a good bit of rice sack fabric that was very dingy. I used the retro clean and it came out beautifully. I hand agitated it and rolled it in a towel before I laid it out to dry. Will post a picture when I get up tomorrow afternoon.
