Assemble tree skirt, bind this year, quilt later?
I know quilting will shrink the piece. It's a nativity scene. With lots of sky. I could just quilt around the figures and the back is angel fabric which could be quilted with a large loop de loop. Any opinions. I also didn't preshrink the back fabric or the batting. Thanks.Tags: None

If you don't quilt it very densely, I think that the tree skirt won't shrink up a lot. You probably want it to be drapey anyway, not stiff. If you won't have time to quilt it this year, I say go for it and bind it, quilt it later! Or here's an alternative idea that just occurred to me... what if you sewed the binding on by machine using water soluble thread? then you could dampen the edge, take off the binding, quilt it and re=bind for next year. Hi, I made this wall hanging years ago before I knew how to add any quilting. This year I decided to add quilting. I never took the binding off before I started, but I did take off the bows and bells. I had only done a few lines of stitching the first time. I stitched the ditches with Bottom Line and used metallic thread for the "tangled lights" design from Leah Day. I had used spray adhesive over ten years ago, but I don't think any of that was still there. I am attempting to attach a "before" and an "after" picture. I think it looks a lot better now and was fun to do. I think you should be able to add quilting after the binding is done if it is layered well.

Well I just did a sample on some of the leftover fabric with the metallic gold thread, I kept fooling with the tension and went to look at some advice from the manufacturer for my machine. I got the tension right once but I'll have to do it again because I forget where it was set. It's going to take a few days to do the design in the sky like Mooses' quilt. My metallic gold thread is from Mettler and it did untwist once. The advice said to increase my stitch length and move my hands slow while the speed is set on high. Merry Christmas everybody!
