Light Weight Quilt

I have a teenage grandson that is extremely warm natured. Although he lives in northeast Tennessee (where it can snow in winter) he sleeps with the windows open year round, often is in shorts with no jacket . I want to make him a quilt that he might actually use so I would like it extremely breathable and lightweight. Any suggestions on the best materials to use? I thought about using a single layer of flannel instead of batting but am not sure it would work. I've only worked with cotton batting so far. I wear wool in the winter in southeast Texas because it is so comfortable over a wide range of temperatures but don't know if wool batting would perform the same as my wool garments. I would love to hear your suggestions. Thanks so much, in advance.

There used to be something called a summer spread, I think... it was just the quilt and a backing with no batting inside. would that work? Kathy

I've heard of using a single layer of flannel instead of batting for things like table cloths, so I think it would work for a quilt, too. I'd definitely try it. It seems like that would give it a little more stability than a summer spread, which is more appealing to me, but that's a personal choice. I would make a sample to see if you like the feel.

I think a single layer of wool batting would be lighter than even flannel and would look really nice. It seems a little counter intuitive, but I still think it would work.

I agree with Betty Jo. I have made quilts with thin wool batting. They are lightweight and comfortable - even in summer.

I agree with Betty Jo and Judith. I use wool batting in all the quilts I make for one of my daughter's, as she never seems to feel the cold but still likes a cover on her even in the summer. Wool is very lightweight and gorgeous to hand quilt too.

What does he sleep under in the different seasons? That should give you an idea of what to put inside the quilt, if anything.

I used bamboo batting for the quilt we use in the summer. It is lighter weight than wool and still breathes. I have been very pleased with my bamboo batting.

I've not used wool, bamboo or silk, I better get with it. I have however considered wool, since my DH is always cold.

I do love how bamboo feels in a quilt. I haven't tried wool or silk.

I was also going to suggest bamboo; that is what I use, and I love it.
