    Fraying Raw Edges

Are there any tricks to keep fabric from fraying (or at least reduce the amount of fraying) when washing (prior to cutting)? Thanks!

On the selvage ends, I usually clip a small triangle of fabric (preferably with pinking shears but regular scissors works too), and then I put my fabric in a lingerie bag prior to putting in the washer. I also wash on either the delicate or handwash cycle (frankly, whichever suits me at the moment  ). I just pulled out of the washer three pieces of fabric just a few minutes ago--minimal fraying.

Thanks, Renata. Going to try that tonight!

Renata, I am going to try your method. I usually serge my edges. That works but it can be time consuming especially if you've gone on a buying spree of fat 1/4's - lots of raw edges.. It's not that bad for me because I have room to leave my serger set up all the time. It is also a sure marker that the fabric has definitely been washed.

If my pieces are a yard or longer, and I have multiple pieces of fabric to wash, I put each in a separate lingerie bag because there is always the possibility that a bit of fray from one piece will wrap itself around another piece of fabric. But I have thrown several fat quarters into one bag and still come out okay.
