What Next?!?
I am a new quilter but I love it! I have made a t-shirt quilt and a simple rail fence quilt. I am ready to start my next quilt. I am still learning and don't want to get too frustrated. Any suggestions for what to tackle next??
Thanks
Katie

Welcome Katie! You might want to start by getting Alex's book "Start Quilting" for beginners through the TQS Shoppe. Here's the link.

Look through the TQS Gallery for lots of inspiration and ideas for what your next project should be! Have fun!

OK, Katie. For your next quilt, you need to decide what you want to accomplish. Do you want to learn new skills? Do you want to make a gift for someone in particular? Do you want to make a wall quilt? A king sized bed quilt? If you give us some guidelines, we can guide you toward your next project.
This is what is next on my list, but this may not be for you!

I would like to make a gift for a friends wedding. I was thinking of something just big enough to enjoy on the couch. I really like the square dance quilt and the nine-patch in the start quilting book. I do not want it to be too complicated because I don't want to get too frustrated since I'm still learning

and it is available from several sources. The pattern was designed by Corliss Searcey of Threadbear in Castlemaine, Victoria, Australia and is her interpretation of
THE BIRD OF PARADISE QUILT TOP c.1856-1863 in the American Folk Art Museum in NYC.
I'm going to be doing it as a BOM, but like everything else I've ever done....it will definitely have a Margo twist!

Eileen, I ordered my BOM kits from Common Threads. They will come in the mail with pattern and fabric. I'll definitely be doing this as a needleturn project, but looking at all the blocks on the blogspot, I know I'll be making changes!!

Rolling eyes........ Some quilters just have to go where angels fear to tread! A quilt like that monster would take me 10 years and I'd definitely give up somewhere along the way.
Katie, Alex did some great little videos for us about selecting fabrics and colours. I would watch those. If you pick a really cool and attractive colour/pattern combo for your fabrics, then even the humble 9-patch would look stunning. I think it's very important that you enjoy making this quilt for your friends because then you'll also enjoy giving it to them. One of the first quilts I ever made was a 9-patch with alternating blocks in a feature fabric. The friends who got it liked it so much that they re-decorated their bedroom to go with the quilt.

I am certainly still a beginner so here's what I've done so far. My first top, still not finished, is a nine patch pattern. I was completely new to sewing so getting it right was hard but comparing my first ever nine patches to the more recent ones it's amazing how much better I got. My second quilt, actually the first one finished, was from StrataVarious Quilts: 9 Fabulous Strip Quilts from Fat Quarters, it was the Sweet and Sour Pattern. You can see my quilt on the site, in my photos. It was a great lesson in color and really quite easy. It went together very quickly. I say either the nine patch or a strata quilt is a great choice. Since then I've done curved piecing, half square triangles and 60% angles- all as workshops with the local quilt guild! I certainly think both of my first quilts gave me a good basic skills to improve upon.
