2008 was a productive year for me! On my design walls you can see three large quilts that I was working on!
I used white flannel on top of insulation board and you can see that some of them were pink and some were blue, and those colors show through the flannel.
My flannel is not secured to the insulation board so I can get to this outlet when I need to. You can see how thick the insulation is, but it is really easy it is to cut it to whatever shape you need. I just used a utility knife, then nailed the insulation board directly to the wall with nails.
When I need a smaller design wall, or want to take one to a class I have this small one that is hinged in the middle with duct tape so that it is free-standing. I just pin flannel to the front side when I'm using it, but it would be better if I took the time to glue it in place!

(The new forum makes it really easy to post photos, but apparently we can only do three at a time.)
If I had it to do over, I would choose a heavier fabric, or maybe even used a light grey colored flannel that worked well in my sister's sewing room. Hers is securely glued on the front with the excess taped to the back. We screwed it to the wall through all layers with drywall screws. It is a much more attractive installation!

I used insulation board as well -- two of the pink ones duct taped together. I covered mine with a piece of king-sized batting and used straight pins to secure the batting to the board. I also cut out a hole for my outlet with a plain old utility knife. Mine is not secured to the wall -- it is "trapped" by my long work table. The table is a countertop with legs attached and the legs have locking wheels. If I need more design room I just roll the table out of the way.

Margo, I love your idea of a portable design wall. I dont have a sewing room, as space is very limited, so something that could go in a cupboard when not in use, and come out when I need it would be great! Maybe it would inspire me to do more rather than moan that I have no room to work in, and do nothing. :-)

Oh my..... I'm impressed! But not everybody has a professional and tidy studio. I'm coming out of the closet here and admit that my quilting space (a small room at the back of the house with large windows on three sides) is only tidy about twice a year. I need to have everything I work on out or I'll be wasting precious time when I have an hour or so to play. And my alternative to a design wall are cheap calico curtains from IKEA. I just close them and pin whatever I want on view to them. So I guess, three walls of the room are just one massive design wall. But if you would come visiting, I'd clear all the stuff off the traditional German beach chair so you can sit somewhere real comfy - either inside or out on the back patio, depending on the weather. From the edge of Sherwood Forest, home of Robin Hood

When my youngest left for college, I had sold his bedroom furniture before he came home for his first visit!!
He knew I was going to do it, and he was OK with the sofa bed when he visited during his college years. That room is now DH's office, and I have taken over the basement! That is the benefit of an empty nest, but I sure do miss the laughter when the kids were all here!

I have photoshop but don't really know how to use it. How did you get the background with the TQS star?
Would that be your background layer?
I assume that you made Dana's? Hers is awesome too, with her own quilt on it! Imagine the possibilities!
